Written by Ann Marie MacDougall
The world is changing and those changes are accelerating rapidly… The pillars of traditional hierarchy are crumbling causing 21st century leaders to face unprecedented levels of complexity as they navigate high performing teams through boiling points of pressure, tight deadlines and transform group ideas into action. From these new world realities, there is an undercurrent of excitement on the potential to empower and evolve humanity. Notwithstanding, leaders are also facing enormous accountability on how they lead their workforce into the future: what they say, what they do, and how they empower their teams to actualize full organizational potential. In this interview, we are grateful to speak with Byron Katie, who shares her wisdom on the power of cultivating leadership calm during chaos through self-inquiry. Her process, called The Work, is being levered across the globe to improve leadership effectiveness, clarify strategy, drive innovation, and unlock human potential. Byron Kathleen Mitchell, known internationally as Byron Katie (everyone calls her Katie), is an American speaker and best-selling author of the books Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, I Need Your Love-Is That True?, A Thousand Names For Joy, and the forthcoming A Mind at Home with Itself. Ann Marie: Katie, thank you for agreeing to participate in this interview. It is a privilege to learn from you, and I am excited to have a discussion on empowering 21st century leaders. 21st Century Leadership ~ Thinking Outside The Pyramid
Written by Ann Marie MacDougall
Whether leaders are prepared for it or not, workplace cultures across industries are changing at an accelerated pace. The pillars of the traditional hierarchical thinking are crumbling thanks to rapidly advancing technology, the rising power of social networks and, above all, a dramatic shift in global demographics. As a result, organizations are shifting focus from process to people by developing a culture of intrapreneurs. Skilled talent has always been in demand, but a new era of global competition is driving the desire for labour pool alignment to unprecedented levels. Today’s corporations must outperform if they want to thrive and not just survive, and the litmus test will be how well they unlock the power and passion of their workforce to innovate, create value, and attract top line growth in expanding markets. For the past two years we’ve gathered research insights from our clients and by contacting 50 leaders in global organizations spanning four continents. Our objective was to capture their views on systemic corporate challenges and to consider their ideas on the most effective management models needed to successfully lead people in the 21st century. Our research uncovered three critical issues: 1..Need for purpose and meaning: There are five generations of employees in the workforce and each has diverse skills, expectations and professional career experiences. What they have in common, however, is a desire to connect their passion and purpose with meaningful work. 2.Increasing complexity: Global leaders are finding it challenging to manage increased complexity by exclusively relying on financial…

From our research, which includes direct contact with 50 individuals in global organizations spanning four continents, we’ve learned that a systemic and recurring corporate challenge is to identify individuals who have developed sufficient self-awareness to successfully lead teams through exceptional change. In this article, we discuss five global trends influencing deep organizational change and how to leverage these trends to drive market leadership. Global Trend 1: Population Growth Rate According to the World Fact Book, the global population is 7.1 billion, the current growth rate is 1.14% and estimated to be less than 1% per year by 2020. Why is this important? Population growth rate plays a significant role in determining the burden imposed on a country by the changing needs of its people for infrastructure, resources, and jobs. Awareness of these trends, and the rapid transformation in global labor supply, enables the astute global business leader to anticipate the impending pressure that will be placed upon their organization to design sustainable frameworks for attracting, developing, and inspiring a non-traditional workforce. Global Trend 2: Shifting Demographics According to Dan Schawbel, Managing Partner of Millennial Branding, demographic changes are shifting at an accelerating pace with five generations currently in the workforce and 75% of the global labor supply estimated…
